Why are custom orthotics worth the effort when you have foot, leg, or even lower back pain? In order to fully explain, we need to set some background.
When they’re working correctly, the joints and muscles of your feet and ankles provide a stable, solid foundation upon which your entire skeleton rests. Your arch flexes like a bow to cushion each step and landing, and your joints from ankles to toes move smoothly and efficiently to propel you forward, backward, and side to side.
Unfortunately, feet don’t always work as well as they should. For starters, foot shape is different, and you may have an inherited foot structure that doesn’t operate as efficiently as it could. At the same time, modern society has thrown a lot of hard, flat, unforgiving surfaces underfoot, and after years of wear and tear, joints and arches of the feet and ankles may slowly drift out of alignment.
Because your feet are your foundation, alignment issues in your feet don’t stay there, either. If your ankles are out of balance, it throws your knees, hips, back, and spine out of whack, too, and that can lead to pain all over.
That’s where custom orthotics come in. Like glasses for your eyes or braces for your teeth, orthotics are tools that realign and reconfigure one part of your body to allow it to work better.
But couldn’t you simply buy cushioned insoles from the drug store and see if they work? You could, but that’d be a little like buying a pair of glasses off of a shelf without knowing what prescription they are, or what prescription you need, or having an optician to fit the frames properly. You’re almost certainly not going to get a high-quality level of treatment, and could end up mostly wasting your money.
Custom orthotics avoid this problem because they’re individually crafted from a scan or mold, taken by a trained and qualified foot specialist, to fit your feet exactly. That way, you know you’re getting just the right level of cushioning and support you need to realign your joints, retrain your muscles, improve your posture, and eliminate your pain. They’re also made from high quality materials that, with proper care, can last for years—much longer than an ordinary insole.
