Regenerative Medicine

Regenerative medicine is a cutting-edge, emerging field that’s all about accelerating your body’s healing processes in a natural way. We’re one of the first to bring these revolutionary treatments to the Northern Nevada community, and we’ve been using them in office to treat some of the most stubborn chronic injuries without surgery. We also use these advanced treatments with foot and ankle conditions early in treatment to facilitate getting patients back to their activities are quickly as possible.

Treatments available include:

MLS Laser Therapy – This treatment harnesses light energy at therapeutic wavelengths to relieve pain, reduce edema and inflammation, boost circulation and metabolism, and stimulate cellular repair. It is highly effective for most cases of musculoskeletal pain and can even help with postsurgical wounds and wart removal. Best of all, it’s painless with no known side effects and cost effective as well.

AmnioFix – This is the most cost-effective, scientifically validated stem cell-derived therapy currently available. The injected amniotic tissue triggers accelerated production of all three lines of stem cells within your body and attracts them to the injection area to repair damaged tissue—all without inciting a negative reaction.

Biomechanics and Orthotics

It all starts with your feet.

A huge percentage of the most common foot and ankle conditions are related in some way to poor biomechanics and structure in your feet and/or ankles. Just like a house with a crumbling foundation cannot stand for long, a person with misaligned feet and poor biomechanics will constantly struggle with pain—not just in the feet, but throughout the body.

One of the best and most versatile ways to realign and retrain your feet to improve biomechanics—and remove the underlying cause of pain—is the use of orthotics.

At Sierra Foot & Ankle, we’re one of the very best in the business at fitting custom orthotic devices and at adjusting prefabricated devices in order to make them fit and work best for your feet and body alignment. Our on-site orthotics lab allows us to make precise fitting adjustments. Whether custom or pre-fabricated we’re able to help you get the absolute best out of your orthotics. We’re able to achieve a successful and effective fit in 98 percent of cases.

Foot Surgery

Surgery is something that we view only as a last resort.

Whenever possible, we’ll always prioritize finding non-invasive and natural solutions to your foot problems, such as orthotics or regenerative therapies. If we’re able to fix the problem without surgery, or even just eliminate the pain and allow you to return to your lifestyle, we will do so.

However, sometimes surgery is absolutely necessary, and in those circumstances, we are well qualified to help you. Dr. Melhuish is an accomplished and board-certified podiatrist who has fixed thousands of feet.

Most of our surgeries can be performed outpatient, saving you substantial time and money, and we’ll always make sure you are well cared for before, during, and after the procedure. We can also incorporate laser therapy in the treatment plan to accelerate surgical wound healing, reduce the risk of infection, reduce the appearance of visible scars, and accelerate rehabilitation.

Foot & Ankle Conditions

If your feet or ankles are in any kind of discomfort, or are simply not looking, feeling, or working as they should, we can help! Dr. Melhuish provides comprehensive care for conditions such as:

Heel Pain

Many patients come to us at their wits’ end, looking for a way to make their pain go away. Heel pain is often not as simple as it looks—many different underlying causes can produce very similar symptoms.

We use diagnostic techniques to discover the root of your problem and listen to your concerns, allowing us to devise a treatment method that works for you—whether it involves orthotics, regenerative medicine, or just a little physical therapy and a new pair of shoes.

Sports Injuries

Every season has its own sports. Football, basketball, hockey, baseball, soccer, lacrosse, running, cycling, hiking, backpacking, skiing and others keep active and competitive people on their feet and moving. The intense training required to be able to play or compete well is good for the body, but the hard impacts and intense forces exerted on the feet can cause painful problems.

Overuse and traumatic sports injuries are common, and we work hard to get you back on the field where you belong! From sudden sprains, ruptures and breaks, to slow-burning chronic injuries like tendinitis and stress fractures, we can help.

Foot Deformities

Did you know that your feet are always changing? Even throughout adulthood, feet tend to get larger, wider, and flatter due to wear, tear, and gravity pulling them down. This is normal, but it also causes a lot of problems.

Joints and bones that become misaligned can make normal activities, or even just wearing normal shoes, painful and difficult. Foot deformities like bunions, hammertoes, or totally flat arches do not get better on their own.

If you seek care for these deformities early, however, we may be able to keep them from getting worse and help you maintain your quality of life without surgery. However, if your foot deformities are severe, we can take you through a surgical repair so you can restore healthy foot shape and function.

Nail and Skin Conditions

Foot care is important inside and out—and neglecting the skin and nails can lead to serious problems and infections. Our podiatry team can explain the cause of your unsightly toenail problem, help you evaluate your treatment options, and implement workable changes to get patients of all ages to love their feet.

We’re one of the best around when it comes to restoring skin and nail health, with advanced treatment options that include PinPointe laser therapy for fungal toenails and MLS laser therapy to aid in wart removal.
