Since [getting orthotics], I’ve got my running to a consistent 30-60 miles a week.

My flat feet have plagued me with debilitating shin splints on and off, seemingly every nine months, since I was in 9th grade. Usually I take my rage out on my bicycle, that two wheeled contraption I’m forced to sit on as proxy for using my legs. I’ve sat on my bike wailing until I couldn’t see clearly enough to ride, rolled over something sharp and got a flat. I threw my bike over the side of the highway and plopped my butt in a patch of cheatgrass. I’ve been picking those prickly seeds out of my shammy ever since.

Dr. Melhuish made me Icon Orthotics near Christmastime 2012. Since then, I’ve got my running to a consistent 30-60 miles a week. I won a half marathon; finished 1st, 5th, 7th, and 9th racing my last season with the University of Montana Triathlon Club; earned 2nd place at a 50k; and ran through the night pacing 13th woman at Western States 100. By this fall, I have plans to pace at the Tahoe Rim Trail 100, run my first 50 miler, and run the fastest known (solo?) time on the Ruby Crest Trail.

Every week this summer I’ve found myself in a new random spot on the Nevada map, working with the state monitoring streams and rivers. Every day I slip in my Icon Orthotics and lace up my running shoes, I’m so grateful to be able to use my legs to explore every niche and crevasse of this Battle Born state. If I had a tail, it would wag until my hips swayed every time I laced up my running shoes.
